Pia and the Slushy Hill
Ages 3-6
In a quiet corner of the snowy coast lived a little penguin named Pia. Every morning, she waddled to her favorite ice hill, the one that sparkled like sugar in the early light. Today, Pia woke up extra excited. She could already imagine the cool rush of sliding down the hill, wings tucked in, belly gliding fast and smooth. But when she arrived, Pia stopped. The ice hill wasn't smooth at all. The snow was soft, slushy, melting around the edges.
"Oh, no! The ice is too slushy for sliding today," Pia said.
Her tummy dipped. She had been looking forward to this all night. She sat beside the shimmering water and let out a tiny sigh. The air was warm and still. Little drops of melting ice plinked into the sea with slow, gentle sounds. After a moment, a calm shadow drifted overhead. It was Sol, a friendly sea bird with soft gray feathers.
"Why so glum, Pia? Is something the matter?" Sol said.
"I wanted to slide, but the hill is too slushy. Now what do I do? Not sliding isn't what I wanted today," Pia said.
Sol perched beside her, folding his wings.
"It's okay to feel sad when things change. Plans melt sometimes, just like ice. But in the quiet, something new can appear," Sol said.
Pia blinked and looked at the water. The sun warmed the surface, making tiny sparkles drift across like floating stars.
"It is kind of pretty," Pia said.
"Let's sit together. We can just watch the shimmers," Sol said.
So they did. Pia and Sol settled side by side, listening to soft drips, feeling the warm breeze, watching the gentle glitter dance on the water. Pia felt her body loosen. The disappointment didn't disappear, but it softened just a little. After a while, Sol ruffled his feathers.
"See? Even on slushy days, small moments are waiting to be found," Sol said.
"Thank you, Sol. I think... I think I like this moment," Pia said.
Pia took a slow breath. Maybe tomorrow the hill would be ready again, but for now, this quiet, shimmering day felt just right. And as the light danced on the water, Pia felt a peaceful warmth settle inside her, soft as a lullaby.
