Taylor's Quiet Shell

Ages 3-6

In a warm, shallow cove lived a little turtle named Taylor. His shell was small and smooth, and he loved floating with his big turtle family. One bright afternoon, the whole family gathered to play. There were splashes, big laughs, flapping fins, and lots of talking all at once. Taylor wiggled his toes in the water.

"It's kind of extra loud today," Taylor said.

His cousins splashed close. His aunties chatted over each other. His uncles told silly jokes that echoed across the cove. The sounds piled up, splishes, giggles, voices. Taylor's head felt all swirly. His tummy felt tight. His shell felt too noisy on the outside and too shaky on the inside.

"It's too much," Taylor said.

Taylor pulled into his shell. It was darker inside, quieter, but his heart still thumped fast. As he curled in tighter, something soft brushed his cheek.

"Huh?" Taylor said.

It was a little piece of seaweed, a snack he'd saved and forgotten.

"Oh, my little seaweed snack," Taylor said.

The small silliness made a warm smile appear. Just for a moment, his worry loosened. A gentle shadow drifted over him. It was his cousin Molly, an older turtle with a slow, peaceful swim.

"Taylor, are you all right in there?" Molly said.

"Everything feels so loud. My body feels jumbled," Taylor said.

"Loud days can feel big. It's okay to pull into your shell when you need to," Molly said.

Taylor peeked out a little more.

"I still feel a little shaky," Taylor said.

"Then stay inside for a moment. Take a slow breath. Let it move through your whole shell," Molly said.

Taylor pulled back in, where it felt safe and quiet.

"Deep breath in, and out. Slow and steady," Molly said.

Taylor breathed with her. His tummy loosened. His head felt less swirly.

"Good. Now find the warm, quiet place in your chest. It's small, but it's there," Molly said.

Taylor pictured a tiny, warm glow inside himself.

"I, I think I found it. I feel it," Taylor said.

They took another slow breath together.

"The noise doesn't feel so big now," Taylor said.

"This calm feeling, you helped make it!" Molly said.

Taylor peeked out fully. The cove was still busy, but it didn't feel overwhelming anymore.

"I can feel quiet again, and all I needed was a little moment and a slow breath," Taylor said.

Taylor knew he could find his quiet anytime he needed it, and that felt really good.
