Novel Effect app: who reads, what it costs, and when audio fits
Novel Effect adds sounds while you read aloud. Check book requirements, free access and prices, then decide whether you want to read or listen tonight.
You read the book. Novel Effect adds the sounds.
Novel Effect follows your voice as you read a supported children's book aloud, adding music, effects and character voices along the way. Its official App Store description makes the division of work clear: someone still reads the story.
That is the useful decision for bedtime. If you want to do the voices and turn the pages, sound effects may be a welcome extra. If you want to sit beside your child and listen together, a finished narrated story is the format to look for.
This guide uses official product information checked on September 25, 2026. It is written by Gushi, which makes a bedtime audio story app. We have not tested Novel Effect's voice recognition on a device.
Which books and devices do you need?
Start by finding your book in Novel Effect's catalog. You need the matching print book or ebook; some ebooks are available inside the app. A soundscape listing alone does not mean the book's text is included. The Novel Effect FAQ explains these options.
For a print book, the documented setup is to select it, choose print, then begin reading after the chime. The app needs microphone permission. The Apple listing supports iPhone and iPad running iOS or iPadOS 13 or later.
Novel Effect also has an Android app and a Premium web version for computers and Chromebooks. Its FAQ lists Chrome, Chromium, Edge and Safari as supported browsers, with Firefox unsupported. Check your device and the particular book before choosing a plan.
Is Novel Effect free, and what does Premium cost?
The mobile app is free to download. The FAQ describes a rotating set of free soundscapes marked with an infinity symbol, while web access requires Premium. Check the selected book's access before promising it as tonight's read.
On September 25, Novel Effect's one-year Premium product page lists $49.99 in US dollars for 12 months. That particular website purchase does not renew automatically. It includes unlimited soundscape access on mobile and web, available in-app ebooks and downloadable book activities.
Apple's US listing shows several purchase entries, including Monthly Premium Access at $7.99 and Annual Premium Access at both $49.99 and $59.99. Those entries do not identify the offer every new customer will receive. Check the price, trial terms and renewal setting shown in your own checkout. The one-time website plan and an auto-renewing in-app subscription need separate comparisons.
A practical way to decide before subscribing
Choose one book you already have and want to read again. Confirm that its soundscape is available to you, then try the whole book. Pay attention to the part you actually care about: does adding sound make this shared read more enjoyable for your family?
For example, a child who wants you to read the same animal book again may enjoy hearing sounds alongside your familiar voices. A parent who wants a break from narrating has a different need. More effects will not take over the reading.

When Gushi narration fits instead
Gushi offers finished bedtime stories with character narration. You choose a story from its library and listen. You can read the full text of stories on the Gushi website first; app narration is a separate step through the App Store.
The current Gushi listing for iPhone and iPad says all stories and playlist creation are free in version 1.2.8. Gushi does not supply Novel Effect's soundscapes or follow your reading of a picture book.

Read Taylor's story before choosing the audio
In Taylor's Quiet Shell, a turtle's family gathering gets loud. Taylor retreats into his shell, finds a forgotten seaweed snack and takes a quiet moment with his cousin Molly. The story is labeled for ages 3 to 6, with 2:58 of narration. That is the recording's duration, not a timed reading estimate.
Open the story card to read the text. If you want to hear it told, follow the app link from the story page. This is a Gushi story example, not a book we have verified in Novel Effect's catalog.
