Gushi

A bedtime stories app for kids who are actually going through something.

Gushi is a bedtime stories app for iPhone built around two ideas. First: stories should help kids process the real challenges they run into during the day, from stage fright and big feelings to learning patience, kindness, and the value of saving. Second: they should sound like stories, with multiple character voices, not a single monotone narrator. Free to download. No screens, no ads, no flickering tablet light at 7:30pm.

What makes Gushi different from other bedtime stories apps

Lessons baked in

Every story is built around a challenge kids actually go through: fear of the dark, trying new things, learning to wait, working through jealousy. They listen, they relate, and the lesson stays with them.

Multiple character voices

Other apps hand you one narrator reading a story. Gushi stories have a cast: narrator plus characters, each with their own voice. The story feels like a show before bed. Not a podcast. Kids stay engaged.

Screen-free by design

Audio only. No glow, no scrolling, no blue light at the exact moment a kid's brain is supposed to be making melatonin. You press play, set the phone face-down, and your child listens in the dark.

Calm bedtime story app alternative

If Calm or Moshi feels too meditation-led for your kid, Gushi keeps the same quiet audio-only bedtime slot but makes the story itself the center. For the fuller breakdown, read the Moshi vs Calm bedtime stories comparison.

How the app works

  1. 1

Pick a story for what tonight needs.

Browse the library by age or by the situation your kid is in tonight. Scared of the dark? There's a story for that. Big feelings about a new sibling? There's a story for that too. Need them to learn that things take practice? Same.

  2. 2

Press play and set the phone down.

Each story runs 2–5 minutes. The narrator and characters do the rest. You can listen with your child or use it as part of the wind-down handoff between you and sleep.

  3. 3

They listen, relax, and quietly absorb the lesson.

Kids don't want to be lectured at bedtime. They want a story. Gushi gives them one. The lesson is part of the story, not pasted on top.

Some of the stories in the library

Each story is multi-voice narrated and tagged by the lesson it teaches. Tap any story to read it free on the web; the full audio narration is in the app.

Common questions about the bedtime stories app

Which bedtime stories app is best for kids?+

The best bedtime stories app depends on what you need it to do. Gushi is built for parents who want bedtime stories that help kids work through everyday challenges and lessons (stage fright, sibling rivalry, big feelings, learning to wait, saving money instead of spending it right away), narrated by multiple character voices instead of a single monotone reader. If you want celebrity-narrated meditations, Calm or Moshi may fit better. If you want a giant catalogue of generic fairy tales, Readmio or Little Stories cover that. Gushi sits in the middle: smaller, curated, and built specifically for kids ages 3 to 8.

Is the Gushi bedtime stories app free?+

Gushi is free to download, and all stories and playlist creation are currently free in the iPhone app. You can also read every story on this website at no cost. The app provides the multi-character audio narration.

What age is the Gushi app for?+

Gushi is designed for kids ages 3 to 8. Each story is tagged by age range. The simplest are 3–6. The core library sits at 4–7 and 4–8. The 5–8 stories handle slightly more complex situations like learning patience, working through frustration, or trying again after failure.

Does the app work without screens?+

Yes. Gushi is audio only. You press play, set your phone down, and your child listens. No light, no scrolling, no flickering screen at 7:30pm. That's on purpose: screen exposure right before bed is one of the most reliable ways to keep kids wired past their natural sleep window.

How long are the bedtime stories?+

Most Gushi stories run 2–5 minutes. They're built to fit inside a bedtime routine: long enough to settle a child, short enough that you can play more than one if needed, and never so long that an over-tired kid loses focus before the resolution.

What makes Gushi different from Calm or Moshi?+

Calm and Moshi lean into ambient sound, breathing exercises, and adult-friendly meditation framing, adapted for kids. Gushi is built kid-first. The stories are character-driven (multiple voice actors per story, not one narrator), age-appropriate plots with gentle lessons baked in, and built to help with the situations your child is actually working through. Not generic relaxation.

Does Gushi have stories for specific situations like potty training or fear of the dark?+

Yes. The library is organized around real situations kids face during the day and carry into bedtime: stage fright, fear of the dark, big feelings, learning to wait, sibling jealousy, growth mindset, trying new things, kindness, saving money, and more. Each story is tagged with the lesson it teaches so you can pick the one that matches what your child needs tonight.
