Yummy Delicious Wait
Ages 3-6
It was a birthday day at the Pine Hill School, rainbow-sprinkled cupcakes waiting for them at the end of the day. Emma, Lily, and Noah were excited, so excited that the morning felt a little wiggly inside their tummies.
"The end of the day feels so far away," Emma said.
"Maybe it won't feel far if we try not to think about it. Don't think about it!" Noah said.
During art, Ms. Sarazi's put out new paint trays, colors none of them had seen before. Emma dipped her brush in a shimmering teal. Lily mixed hers with golden yellow. Noah gently swirled pink and white together. The paints moved slowly, curling and stretching like tiny waves finding each other.
"Look, my color is perfect for a mermaid tail. Mine perfect for dandelions," Emma said.
"I'm going to paint tiny pink jellyfish," Noah said.
They laughed softly, and for a long, warm moment, they didn't think about cupcakes at all, just mixing, changing colors like magic. Time slipped forward without them noticing. Later, outside on the playground, the wind turned gentle and playful. It picked up little leaves and spun them in slow circles, like tiny dancers practicing soft little turns.
"Look, they're twirling," Noah said.
"They're dancing with the breeze!" Lily said.
"It's like the wind is putting on a show," Emma said.
The three friends watched the leaves drift and swirl, light as feathers, gliding across the playground. They followed the little leaf dancers from slide to sandbox, from sandbox to swings, completely wrapped up in the quiet joy of it. Cupcakes didn't cross their minds, not even once. Then, almost suddenly, the bell rang. The afternoon light changed. Voices grew soft and excited. A tray appeared on the birthday table.
"It's cupcake time already?" Lily said.
"That came fast," Emma said.
They each held a cupcake, soft in their hands, rainbow sprinkles on the frosting, and the warm scent of vanilla in the air. Noah takes a big bite.
"Yummy, delicious!" Noah said.
Emma learned something to remember: waiting feels easier when you focus on other parts of the day. They help the time move softly, quietly, until the cupcake moment arrives before you know it.
