The Ladder Club

Ages 4-7

On the playground, the tallest slide stood like a rocket ship, and the kids? They were ready to form a club, a very slippery one. Sam, the oldest kid, with his signature backward baseball cap, stood tall at the bottom of the ladder, boss of the playground. Isla, with her signature ponytail on each side, loved slides, just not that one. And a cluster of kindergartners, lunch still on their faces, bounced around nearby with endless energy.

"Welcome to The Ladder Club. To join, you've got to climb the tall ladder and blast down the big tunnel slide," Sam said.

Sounds easy enough, unless your knees turn all wobbly at the top. Everyone clapped and cheered. Well, almost everyone. Isla clapped halfway. Her stomach did a flippy-flop just thinking about the top of the slide. She watched the other kids in front of her. One boy in kindergarten spun sideways and landed butt-first in the sand with a plop. A girl in her TK class slid down in slow motion, yelling... "No!" It was the longest no since someone dropped their popsicle last year.

"Okay, Isla, your turn," Sam said.

Her rainbow sneakers started up the ladder, step by step. But halfway, she froze. Her knees started to wobble, like jello.

"I, I don't think I can," Isla said.

Behind her, another girl from her class whispered.

"I don't like this slide either," Little Kid said.

And there it was, the secret. Isla realized she wasn't the only one. Isla turned around. At the bottom, two more classmates fidgeted, one chewing their sleeve, one kicking the dirt with their shoes. Lots of kids felt nervous. They just hadn't said it out loud.

"Hey, what if this wasn't a tallest slide club, but an all slides club? Everyone picks their own slide, the one they feel good about, and we each add something silly, a funny word, a wave, or a spin," Isla said.

The kids gasped. That meant everyone could join in.

"So it's not about one big slide. It's about having fun down the slide your own way," Sam said.

"Yep, all slides count. And the silliest slides get the loudest cheers," Isla said.

You could almost hear the nervous kids exhale. "Whew." Then chaos, laughter, and courage, kids down all the slides. Ba-nana! One kid did the robot on his way down. Someone pretended to be a melting ice cream cone, slowly oozing to the bottom. Another kid tried a triple spin spiral, and ended up in a giggling heap at the bottom. Three kids, one heap. Finally, it was Isla's turn. She marched to her favorite zigzag slide. Her rainbow sneakers gripped the steps. Arms raised, she shouted...

"Ziggity-zaggity-zoomity!" Isla said.

Her friends cheered so loud, even the squirrels stopped to stare. Soon, the whole playground was a chorus of cheers, whooshes, and the silliest words you've ever heard. From that day on, the Ladder Club wasn't about one tall slide. It was about choosing your own, having fun, and cheering for your friends. Because Isla was brave and spoke up for herself and others, the club became a place where everyone could join. You can do that too. Think for yourself, do what feels right for you, and still cheer others on.
