The Sunflower & Leo

Ages 4-7

In a sunny garden stood the sunflower, tall, golden, and glowing with warmth. Each morning, she turned her face to the sun and smiled. In that same garden played a boy named Leo. Hair like morning sunshine, sneakers untied, his laughter filled the air. The sunflower loved Leo. She gave him shade, crunchy seeds, and bright petals for his games.

"I'm king of the garden. All bow before your king," Leo said.

And the sunflower played along and bowed happily. She gave and gave, simply because she loved him. But Leo didn't even notice. As the summers passed, Leo's asks grew bigger.

"Sunflower, my birthday party needs decorations. More petals, please," Leo said.

He plucked and plucked until her golden crown grew thin. The bees buzzed in confusion. Without her petals, they couldn't find their way. Even the butterflies drifted away, searching for new blooms. Still, the sunflower whispered kindly...

"It's okay, little one. I'm glad to see you so happy," Sunflower said.

But Leo didn't notice how her stem was bending lower each day. Years rolled by and the garden grew quiet. One evening, Leo, taller now, came back. The sunflower drooped low. Her leaves were dry. Her once golden face had faded pale in the sun.

"Oh, I see now. You gave me shade, snacks, petals, laughter. You gave me so much, and I never even noticed just how much," Leo said.

For the first time, Leo truly saw the sunflower and how much she had loved and cared for him. His heart felt warm.

"You've cared for me all these years, and I never even," Leo said.

He didn't say another word. He knew just what to do. He bent down and cleared the weeds. He brought water and poured it gently at her feet. He made a small fence to keep her safe, and each morning, he stopped by to say...

"Good morning, Sunflower. You look brighter today," Leo said.

Day by day, her golden glow returned. The bees buzzed back. The garden hummed with life again.

"Leo, your kindness and care feels brighter than the sun. It's the sweetest gift, one I never even knew I needed," Sunflower said.

The sunflower stood tall again, her face warm in the sunlight. Nearby, Leo smiled with a full heart, not as a king, but a friend who had learned to give back.
