Lemonade Lane

Ages 5-8

On Lemonade Lane, three little houses stood in a row. And on one hot, sunny morning, three lemonade stands popped open. It was hot outside. The sweet smell of sugar and lemons drifted down the block. Cups sparkled with cold lemonade that made mouths pucker, then smile. At House 1, Tara had rainbow straws and glittery cups. At House 2, Max had a silly sign, and his parrot, Peeko, on his shoulder. At House 3, Sammy had neat napkins, a big smile, and four little jars lined up in a row. All day long, neighbors stopped by, sipping, puckering, and smiling. Coins clinked higher and higher in each kid's jar.

"Yes, I'm rich! I want balloons! Lots of balloons!" Tara said.

Tara ran off and bought a bundle. Red, blue, yellow, purple. She twirled and laughed, but whoosh, the strings slipped, and the balloons floated into the wide, blue sky.

"Wait! Come back!" Tara said.

The balloons didn't listen. Max and Peeko had their own plans. Bubble gum! Bubble gum!

"Big mountain!" Pico The Parrot said.

"Okay, okay, Peeko. Let's get a whole mountain," Max said.

They came back with a teetering pile of bubble gum packs. Peeko perched proudly on top. Max chewed and chewed until his cheeks puffed so wide that Peeko squawked.

"Chipmunk! Chipmunk!" Pico said.

"Delicious," Max said.

Then pop, splat. The biggest bubble burst. Sticky pink gum landed on Max's nose, his hair, even Peeko's tail feathers.

"Sticky. Stuck. Squawk! Too much gum!" Pico said.

Meanwhile, Sammy lined up her jars. She tapped each one with care.

"One for a little treat. One to save for a rainy day. One to buy more lemons and sugar so the lemonade stand can keep going tomorrow. And one for the playground fund to fix the broken swings," Sami said.

She bought a small popsicle to enjoy. She slipped a few coins into her piggy bank for a rainy day. She added new lemons and sugar to her stand, and she dropped a shiny coin into the jar marked donate. And the next day, she did it again. And the day after that. Every sunny day, Sammy followed her lemonade loop. A small treat, save for a rainy day, restock the lemonade stand, and donate. One afternoon, a sudden rainstorm blew in. The wind toppled Sammy's pitcher. Crash! And lemonade spilled across the sidewalk. But Sammy just smiled and opened her piggy bank.

"My rainy day fund will take care of this. Easy-peasy mac and cheesy," Sami said.

That same day, Sammy bought a brand new pitcher. By the next morning, her stand was back in business. By summer's end, Tara's balloons were gone. Max's gum was gone too. But Sammy's lemonade stand was still thriving. Cup by cup, coin by coin, growing little by little. Filling her piggy bank and even helping build a better park for everyone. And that's how a few coins saved today can pour into something wonderful tomorrow.
