The Runaway Sandwich

Ages 4-7

At the edge of a green field was Sunny Acres Farm. Chickens clucked, the red barn swayed, and a sleepy cat purred on a fence post. Inside the farmhouse kitchen, sunlight spilled across the table and the air smelled like fresh bread and honey. Right in the middle of the table sat a sandwich named Sam, stacked high, crusts still warm.

"Oh, no! They'll see what's inside me!" Sandwich Sam said.

Avocado, sardines, and honey. Sam thought it was the weirdest lunch ever. Before anyone could take a bite- "I'm out of here." He leapt off the plate, bounced off a chair, and tumbled out the door. In the yard, Penny the chicken pecked at her lunch.

"Hey, what's the rush?" Penny said.

"Everyone will think I'm yucky," Sandwich Sam said.

"My lunch pops and squishes. Corn and peas! Everyone's got their own flavor," Penny said.

But Sam kept running. By the barn, Gus the goat munched happily.

"What you fleeing from, Sandwich?" Gus said.

"My weird fillings!" Sandwich Sam said.

"Ha, weird? I eat carrot tops and cardboard. Delicious," Gus said.

Sam slowed, thought, and trotted on. At the pond, Tulip the duck splashed by.

"Bread crusts and watermelon, that's my favorite," Tulip said.

"Watermelon? With bread?" Sandwich Sam said.

"Yup. Different is fine," Tulip said.

Sam smiled a little crumbly smile. His bread was soggy, but his heart felt lighter. Under the oak tree, Bella the cat stretched in the sun.

"Why so glum, Crumb?" Bella said.

"Avocado, sardines, honey? No one will like it," Sandwich Sam said.

"Maybe not everyone, but someone will. You just haven't found your fan yet," Bella said.

Sam stopped. Maybe his mix wasn't so strange after all. Penny flapped her wings.

"Let's all share our favorite foods!" Penny said.

They sat in a circle, corn, peas, carrot tops, crusts, watermelon, milk, cucumber, and one proud little sandwich. Each animal offered a bite or two, swapping snacks and giggling as they tasted new things. Even Sam helped mix up a new batch of sandwiches, each one wonderfully weird. Just then, Old Mac the farm dog trotted over.

"Avocado, sardines, and honey? My favorite combo," Old Mac said.

"Really?" Sandwich Sam said.

"Really. You've got great taste, Sam," Old Mac said.

Sam puffed up proudly. For the first time, he felt perfectly himself. From that day on, no lunch at Sunny Acres Farm was ever too weird because every taste had its fan. Remember, being different isn't something to hide. It's what makes you one of a kind and sometimes someone's new favorite flavor.
